XinYuan Guan

Prof. XinYuan Guan got his PhD degree in 1993 at the University of Arizona. After Post-doctoral training in the University of Michigan, he was recruited by the National Human Genome Research Institute in NIH as a senior staff fellow. He was appointed as Unit Head (Microdissection Technology) in NHGRI in 1994. In 1999, he joined the Department of Clinical Oncology, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) as an Associated Professor and Head of Laboratory of Cancer Genetics. He was then promoted as Professor (2007), Endowed Professorship (2016, Sophie YM Chan Professor of Cancer Research) and Chair Professor (2018, Chair of Cancer Genetics).

He was the Director of Centre for Cancer Research (2013-2017) in HKU. Now, he is Vice President (Research) of HKU-Shenzhen Hospital (2019-present), Deputy Director of State Key Laboratory for Liver Research (2010-present), Co-Director, MOE Key Laboratory of Tumor Molecular Biology (2019-present), Director, Shenzhen Key Laboratory for Cancer Metastasis and Personalized Therapy (2022-present), and Visiting Professor at Sun Yat-Sen University (2005-present). His research interests include the identification and characterization of cancer-related genes, cancer stem cells and cancer microenvironment in hepatocellular, esophageal and nasopharyngeal carcinomas.

Prof. Guan has published more than 430 papers with a total citation of >34,000 times. He obtained many awards including the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars (1998), State Natural Sciences Award of China (Second-class, 2010), State Scientific and Technological Progress Award of China (First-class, 2012), Science and Technology Prize of Medical Academy of China (First-class, 2018), and State Scientific and Technological Progress Award of China (Second-class, 2019).
